Huruma School

Dear friends, we sincerely hope this note finds you all doing well this holiday season. It is amazing how quickly a year goes by.

We would like to introduce you to some very good friends, Prince and Chipo Makaya. They minister together in Nairobi, Kenya. Chipo is the director of a small school project in Huruma Village in the slums on the outskirts of Nairobi. They meet in a small, renovated shipping container and are making a difference in the lives of many. Please take a moment to watch this encouraging video of the ministry.



 

They need sponsors for the children who attend the school and so we are writing to ask if you would prayerfully consider blessing them as they bless others. $35 per month - just over $1 per day - will give each child all the school supplies he or she needs as well as meals.

1945-2010 Max Raul Zamorano

Max R. Zamorano, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, entered eternal rest on August 8, 2010 at the age of 65. He was born on March 19, 1945 in Monterrey, Mexico to Máximo R. and Manuela G. Zamorano. Max started serving our God after training at Lubbock’s Sunset School of Preaching, where he later served with distinction as Dean of the Spanish Department. His first love and passion was teaching the message of Salvation. He served as Preaching Minister to startup Spanish language Church of Christ congregations in Dimmitt, Grand Prairie, Houston, Andrews and finished his formal service as Associate Minister with the New Braunfels, Texas Church of Christ.

Among his personal highlights he counted his service abroad as a short-term missionary delegated to Colombia, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Uruguay, Honduras and Spain. He kept his eye on helping congregations in Rio Bravo, Monterrey and Torreón, Mexico.

He also Loved being a coach for NBLL, first with his youngest son and most recently for his oldest grandson. He often was found at the baseball fields even if his team was not playing. 

He was preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Zamorano, and a son Max R. Zamorano V., and his parents. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Delia Tavarez Zamorano, sons Ronnie Mark (of El Paso, Texas), Jonathan David and his wife Lissette, and his daughter, Eunice Lois Zamorano-Alcalá and her husband Noah Alcalá. He is also survived by his brothers Arturo Elias and Rubén Zamorano (San Antonio, TX) and cousins Carmen Tabor (Garland, TX), Yolanda Zamorano and Lydia Zamorano (Arlington, TX) as well as inlaws from Snyder Texas. Max is further survived by his grandchildren, Savannah, Alex, Justine,

Jasmine, Maxwell, MaDel, Micaela, and Julian. He often stated had he known that having grandchildren were so much fun he would have had them first.

Max was a dear brother, friend, and coworker to many. His knowledge of the scripture, passion for the lost, warm, friendly demeanor, and quick smile will be missed by all who knew him. He always wanted to serve the Lord right up until his death and the Lord seems to have granted him that wish. For those who do not know, Max spent his last week here on earth serving the brothers and sisters in Mexico. He had returned from Mexico just hours before the Lord called him home. In the last days leading up to his passing he had taken a week long humanitarian trip to Monterrey. He had gathered bleach, water, canned food, cleaners, brooms, towels and other supplies that they would need for cleanup from all the bad weather they had received. His wife (Delia) and daughter (Eunice) found many photos of this last trip on his digital camera after he passed.  There were photos of Max and brothers and sisters from the Church in Monterrey distributing all the supplies. Evidently, they had all stayed up until 3:00 am the night before organizing the supplies, one for each household. The next day they delivered everything by walking around the city, handing out the goods.

The family believes Max took this last trip knowing he would be going home soon because he had not felt well in the weeks leading up to the trip. His daughter Eunice wrote,

“My Dad always enjoyed helping others, whether it was teaching them, crying with them, or giving out cleaning supplies. He wanted to help them out in any way he could. After delivering all those cleaning supplies on Thursday he got in his little white truck and drove to Rio Bravo, where he kept going. Upon his arrival in Rio Bravo, he and Arturo Para purchased mass quantities of school supplies for the unfortunate children. They delivered them on Friday before he returned home to New Braunfels, totally exhausted.

Considering all that he did on his last trip into Mexico, we say Daddy lived and passed from this earth exactly how he wanted - giving and helping others. His heart was for the lost. We were told that even while handing out all of the cleaning supplies in Monterrey, he was inviting everyone to church on Sunday. He wanted them all to come and know the Lord! We always laugh because we know how determined a man my dad could be at times. Even in handing out these items he was making sure they knew why they were doing it and from whom the gifts had come!” 

As difficult as it is for him to have left us, we know that he has received his reward and is enjoying an eternity with his true father in heaven. And anyone who knew Max can’t help but grin at the thought of him walking around heaven with the apostles and other great men of faith.

Ministry Report from Mexico

Dear brothers and sisters,

I pray and hope that all your season has been a very prosperous one, and that all of you are enjoying yourselves in the company of your loved ones and families. We are all enjoying God's Blessings!
  
There has been so much territory covered and so many Brethren have been seen since last time I wrote!  I don't know where to begin!  The first of December, I finished up teaching at the Preacher’s school with the brothers in Rio Bravo.  They had a delicious cake awaiting us in spite of the cold weather. Our classes were fine.  We started with about 24 and ended with about 12 Brethren.  We were able to cover the Subjects: The Life of Christ and History and Geography of the Old Testament.  I hope the class learned as much as I did.

On the 11th of December I was able to be with the Brethren from Monterrey.  The 12th of December is a religious holiday.  The birthday of The Virgin of Guadalupe, Patron Saint of Mexico falls on the 12th, but everything shuts down on the 11th of December and doesn't open up till the 13th.  You should have seen the pilgrims completely filling the roads and highways going to Mexico City!  It took me 2 ½ hours to get my travel visa!  I wanted to go to Uahutla, Hidalgo, but was told by many people I would be better to travel after the 14th of December.  So I decided to spend time with the Eguren brothers of Monterrey and Arturo Parra of Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas. I also visited the homes of many Rio Bravo Bretheren, teaching them and spending rich time with them.  I spent a great time with Arturo's new congregation too.  I preached for them on Sunday morning, causing me to get home late.

My Health has been good and I have received some good reports from my Doctors. God is Great.

I spent the holidays here with loved ones.  On the 27th of December I was visited by Ernest, one of the Eguren brothers from Monterrey.  We spent that Sunday afternoon dreaming and making plans for 2010.  There are plans for a Christian email ministry for Monterrey and the surrounding area.  God has given us a brain that when we use it for His cause it works great!

Please continue praying for us that God may bless us more and more.  I want to thank the friends of INTERCEDE and the good they are doing to help me to carry the Good News throughout the Spanish speaking world.  Thank you so much for your support each and every month! Update from Max

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
    I pray and hope that when you receive this one all of you find yourselves in the best of health and prosperity.
    The month of October was a good month. From the 5th until the 7th we (Jaime) and I were in Lubbock, Texas. We were there for some lectures. We travelled for the K.C. Moser Ministry Lectures. Not only did we make some good contacts, but people found out about our work and the good that Jaime has done in the summer time in Africa. I was able to meet two young men from Artesia, another young lady from Texas Tech, and others he has worked with in Africa. And of course we met with brother Jim Beck a professor at LCU. It was very refreshing to meet him again after many years.
    During the rest of the month and on through November, I will be teaching at a preacher’s school in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. I have the blessing of teaching Old Testament History and Geography and The Life of Christ. They are both good courses and I have the blessing of having students who want to learn. They surprise me much in that they will memorize much of my teaching and lessons. We started out with 20 students but as you know, work is very scarce so some dropped out and we now only have 12 students. Husbands and wives are attending so a lot of good is coming from this. I've met many from the brotherhood and many preachers from the area. Pray for us because I want to start the same classes in Monterrey in the near future. God has been good to me and I want to give of myself as much as I can!
    I'm also planning to be with the Vinasco brethren in the state of Hidalgo in the near future, maybe in December. They are in a very remote location and I know these brethren would appreciate a visit.
    Please PRAY for all these works that we may help them grow in wisdom and stature with God. Let's pray the Lord of the Harvest send some helpers to His vineyard and some more support! God bless you Jaime and please continue the struggle.

Update on John

Dear friends,

Thank you.  Thank you for the notes, calls, prayers, and gifts on behalf of John Chengo.  As you know, John was mugged a few weeks ago and gratefully escaped with little harm done.  He had his school fees with him and all of it was stolen.

And even though these are hard times, you have come through in a powerful way.  We needed $2000 quickly to make sure the school would re-admit him.  To date, $1640 has been raised.  $900 of this amount was wired to John and the school allowed him to continue his studies considering the circumstances.  We only lack a few hundred dollars more, so if some of you have prayerfully considered helping John, now would be the time.

Hello friends and family!

Below are excerpts from a long email from John Chengo. We are sponsoring John to go to med school. Last week I sent him school fees to cover this semester and he was mugged later the same day! Unfortunately he had all the money with him and they took it! Thankfully, he was not hurt. Read below for more.

We need to raise $2000 as soon as possible to keep John in school! The school has allowed him to return given the circumstances, even though schools in Kenya normally do not allow students who haven’t paid to attend classes.

Hallo Bro Jaime. Let me take this time to thank the Almighty for preserving my life. Every one is well and as I type this message am with Ziro and Dad here at Kilifi.

I thank God for the money you sent from Intercede for my schooling, but something terrible happened and am afraid because it has totally confused us here. On 1st I went to Kilifi at around 2pm to collect the fees and Ziro gave me the amount as stated in the fees structure. I signed and confirmed that it was the correct amount of money. We ate together with Masha and Katsuki and after praying, I left.

On reaching the bus stage at Kilifi I wanted to board a gari to Msabaha to see my dad so that I can get some money for fare to school and pocket money. While I was standing at the stage, 2 men asked if I could show them the District Commissioner’s office. I crossed the road with them and entered into their van. Instead of taking the DC's way, they took the Mombasa road and when I intervened, one of them drew a gun and forced me to lie facing down on the seat. They searched me and robbed me of the whole amount of fees, my phone, and other 500 shillings. They kept on discussing in a language not known to me and took me round while threatening to kill me. They took me around all through the night to a very far place I was not able to identify and at about 5 am in the morning they let me free. I reached the main road and rushed to Mtwapa police station. The Police assisted me to communicate to family members and friends.

Ndugu yangu, am glad with only one thing, that they did not touch my life. I saw death but God turned it to something that he knows best. Please pray for me cause am still not stable. I believe that God has a precious purpose for my life and that’s why he decided to protect it.
